While P&Z made the right call, what many people don't know is that the County Commissioners can set aside P&Z's recommendation and approve the project. Therefore, the fight to preserve our rural, non-commercial way of life in South Bryan is not over. As you may recall, P&Z recommended against River Oaks. Yet we have River Oaks. I suspect the commissioner who invested in River Oaks as well as his partners wish they could turn back the clock on that one as well as their request to annex the property at the intersection of Port Royal and 144 into the city. (Check our City Council Minutes for May 1, 2007) http://www.richmondhill-ga.gov/MayorandCouncil/RichmondHillCityCouncilMinutes/2007CouncilMinutes/tabid/314/Default.aspx
This same River Oaks condo owner/commissioner was on the committee to locate property for the county administrative building. The property that was chosen is adjacent to the SPLOST PARK. The SPLOST Park and proposed administrative building is almost completely surrounded by Bryan Land & Timber property. What a great scheme on the part of Bryan Land & Timber/Murphy. The tax payers of this county build a park-amenity for Bryan Land & Timber and Bryan Land & Timber almost succeeded in getting the school board to build a school. One out of two isn't bad. So in the unlikely event that Murphy's project is turned down, the commissioners have already chosen to commercialize this area by locating the county administrative buildings in a predominately residential area at the recommendation of Mr. Murphy's partner and county commissioner, Toby Roberts.
Wouldn't it make more sense to locate the administrative buildings on the same campus as the Sheriff's Complex. Somehow, I think that the individual who donated the land would be willing to donate just a little more to preserve the residential appearance of South Bryan. If you do not want the administrative buildings 10 miles out of downtown Richmond Hill in an area where the traffic is already bumper to bumper, you had better speak now.
As you know, the decision to locate the county administrative buildings on the campus with the SPLOST park was done with NO input from the citizens of this county. Doesn't this make you just a little curious as to what the players' true motives were? If you disagree with this decision, start a petition in opposition or ask to be placed on the next agenda for the next meeting of the county commissioners. You can do this by contacting Phil Jones at 653-3819 or via email pjones@bryan-county.org. The County Commissioners will meet on Tuesday, November 6, at 1:00 p.m. in Pembroke. To address the commission you must asked to be placed on the agenda at least ten days prior to the meeting. Sign up and be heard.
