Boone? RH Head Coach?

I am sure that Coach Boone is a great coach. However, he coaches middle school football. Apples and oranges. Middle school is glorified rec league where the fastest kid still turns the corner and runs for yards. The male body changes in high school. Weight, size, and strength trump speed. Middle school is made up of kids aged 11-13. High school varsity football is made up of man sized players aged up to 18. Success in middle school does not translate to high school football.

In fact, the only head coaching experince on the high school level Boone has is at Bryan County High School 10 years ago. He was horrible. Couldn't win a game. Got fired. Was a laughing stock among high school coaches. I'm sure people change, but check facts, people. Boone? Please.

By my count, over 20 different coaches (head and assistant) have come through RHHS over the last 12 years. That is a great deal of coaching experience to yield continued losses. Maybe coaching isn't the whole problem.

Major,
In this blog you refer to Coach Boone as the "laughing stock among high school coaches" and another blog you refer to him as the "laughing stock of south Georgia", I would like to check those facts as you encouraged all of us to do. (I have lived in south Georgia for 26 years now and Bryan County for 15 of those years and for the life of me I cannot remember sitting around the dinner table laughing at Coach Boone.) Can you provide me with your source for that information? Was this a random or house to house poll? I would also need to know where you found the information on his firing, as it seems that everywhere else in GA teachers only have one year contracts and those are simply not renewed when the teachers are no longer wanted.

It would have been proper for you to give us an idea of Coach Boone's record at BCHS and state facts, but for you to make a personal attacks based on your own opinion or what you heard is out of line. I am sure Coach Boone can defend himself and I am sure you would not use those words in person to him, but I felt compelled to reply to your fantastic claims, as I know him through his coaching of my son at RHMS. I do not know him well but my son respects him and has responded favorably to his coaching. He has always been respectful to my kids in school and to me when I have had contact with him. He has done a great job at the middle school level and will take an undersized team to the championship game again this year.

As for the other "fact" you threw out there, I must quote Lee Courso, "Not so fast my friend", I have not been able to find it written anywhere that says; weight, size and strength, trump speed. Any of them can be coached effectively you just have to work with what you have.

I am not sure about laughing stock of south Georgia but his record at Bryan County was dismal. In 3 years his record was 0-10, 2-8, 3-6-1. Doesn't inspire confidence. From different sources unrelated I have heard that one of his biggest downfalls was the fact that he allowed outside interests; big time softball, to get in the way. This was the rumor, cant clarify nor refute it. Could have been that he was too young to take on the head coach job when he did at Bryan County. But he has done a great job coaching the middle school at RH. He has turned around a program that was average at best before he got there. Middle school does not take near the amount of time and energy that high school football takes so maybe this is right up his alley.

kstover commented on Tuesday, Oct 30, 2007 at 12:30 PM

It is correct to say the record is dismal, but Major Coffery resorted to a personal attack that he tried to pass off as fact and that is pathetic, especially when he chides others in another blog for calling coaches "idiots" and then calls parents of those players hypocrites.

As far as time spent goes on middle school as opposed to high school football I am not so sure they are that far apart. Coach Boone has implemented a summer weight program that starts about a month after school gets out in the spring and continues until practices can start in August. The season ends around the first of November every year.

And hopefully the middle school will win tomorrow night.

LETS GO MIDDLE SCHOOL WILDCATS!!!

frmrfan commented on Tuesday, Oct 30, 2007 at 14:06 PM

As far as time spent is concerned between a winning high school coach and a middle school coach the difference is probably more than you think. High schools right off the bat have an extra day thrown in because games are on Friday. Most coaching staffs spend at least one day of the weekend watching Fridays game tape and game tape of the upcoming opponent. Adds up to an extra 200+ hours during the season alone. Add in 2 weeks of spring football, double the summer workout time from the middle school, throw in a week of football camp and you will just be scratching the surface of the time required of a successful high school head coach.

KStover, where was this indignation when the high school coaches were being mocked and ridiculed? I see you only climb on your high horse when it suits you.

Okay, Okay. I apologise for the personal attack. But, how is a coach with a, to use your words, "dismal record" the right man for the high school job. Boone is a good middle school coach where his simple and effective middle school schemes work. He doesn't have to worry about ineligible athletes, raiding players from private high schools, and dealing with delusional parents. Just get outside, run C-gap to daylight, and let the fastest kid win. I'm sure Boone is a fine man. My point is that to hold him up as the gold standard and shoot down the other coaches is nearsighted and not ging to produce better results than what you see now.

Parents wanted Dowis out and Traylor in. Got him. Went 0-10.
Parents wanted Traylor out and Brocato in,Got him. Went 2-8.
Parents want Brocato out and Boone in. Again, he hasn't won on the high school level.

Maybe we should quit listening to the parents.

My son wasn't a great football player. It had nothing to do with his coaches. I love him with all my heart. I could see reality.

Can you?

rhin08 commented on Tuesday, Oct 30, 2007 at 22:09 PM

Dowis and Traylor left on their own. Dowis went back to school and Traylor left to get back into administration. Parents did not make them leave. Richmond Hill Middle School does have an academic rule so they do worry about ineligible players. Last time I checked parents can send their children to a private school K-12 not just 9th-12th. The middle school players usually have the same parents from middle school through high school. So I believe he deals with a lot of same things high school coaches deal with. High school football is more complex than middle school football, but a good coach is one who is respected by his players and demands discipline.

Major,

I have no idea what you are reading. In my posts I did not even suggest that Coach Boone be the high school coach. I was simply pointing out your obviously unsupported and unwarranted personal attack. You are the one that posted the headline; Boone? RH Head Coach?

As for the other situation, I, unlike you, am not inclined to comment on a situation I have no knowledge of, I responded to this because I didn't feel it was right to have those kind of comments you made out there without some kind of rebuttal. In this day and age some people believe everything they read.

"Dismal record" was not my phrase, that was introduced by another poster, I simple agreed that "dismal" was a good adjective to decribe "record". That looks at the record and takes personal attacks out of the conversation. Your mistake was to use adjectives to describe a person which made it personal.

Lastly, I have never shot down another coach in any of these posts and for you to suggest that I have is irresponsible on your part. You run a slippery slope for all involved when you start posting things that are not true and unsupported.

I can see reality just fine and it does not include having to make something up and try to pass it off as fact.

My senior season at Bryan County, Boone was my head coach. We were 3-6-1. Now, before you talk bad about Boone, get your facts together. To begin with, we only had 28 players on the team. The starters played both ways against schools who had 40+ players. Boone was not a factor there. Depth was! We could not hang because we were playing every play of the game while the other side was getting breaks and only playing offense or defense. The halftime score was either tied or a margin +/- of seven points. After that, the other team would get a good lead and win. Dont blame Boone, blame the morale of the parents at BCHS that did not allow their kids to play. We played hard, Boone coached hard. Yes, he did play softball, but it did not get in the way of football, at least the year I played for him. Go Boone!

I would like to say one thing about Coach Boone. He proved himself last night. Him, his assistants, and team got the job done. They won the CHAMPIONSHIP game!

Need I say more?

lemondsc commented on Thursday, Nov 01, 2007 at 22:33 PM

To rhparentutu, first of all its COACH Boone to you. you have no idea what you're talking about. He is an excellent coach, i know from experience. while coaching at BCHS he had disciplinary issues with his team where he made the tough decision where kids had to grow up and take responsibility for their actions even at the expense of losing a game. As far as him being a laughing stock i dont recall any other coaches in richmond hill in the last ten years winning a championship, or even getting there. so laugh at that. he shows respect to his players while they show him the respect that he deserves in return. And if my memory serves me correctly, the middle school team has won more games under COACH Boone this year than the high school has won in 5 years under three "coaches." So i think its VERY safe to say he is qualified.

practiceallamerican commented on Friday, Nov 02, 2007 at 01:29 AM

rhparentutu, you're an idiot.

Boone had the same problems at BCHS that he is having at RHMS. The same problems that the past three coaches at the high school are having.

it's not understanding blocking schemes or what coverages the defense is running. It's not how to coach the boys how to tackle or showing them the right routes to run.

It's the culture you have to change.

Let's take rutgers or even south florida for example. (They are college football teams for those of you that do not know.) who the hell has ever heard of these teams before this year. no one. they didn't just come out of thin air. You're starting to see more programs come out of "no where" to beat the "big" schools because the coaches change the culture of the school, the town and the student body.

It takes a long time to change people. How many new tricks have you learned lately?

You have to change not only the parents, the players, the teachers, and the students perception of your team. You have to change your opponents perception of your team.

Too many of these kids come to middle school football not knowing the basic fundaments needed to succeed at any level. they don't know how to block. they don't know how to tack. They have no idea how to run a post or a fly route.

Funny since Boone left, we actually have won more football games (BCHS) than his team has...what does that say?

lemondsc commented on Saturday, Nov 03, 2007 at 11:20 AM

to summertime, maybe you should get your facts straight, COACH Boone coaches the middle school and they won 7 out of only 8 games and a CHAMPIONSHIP. DID YOU? don't answer I already know.

YouMovedHere commented on Sunday, Nov 04, 2007 at 16:51 PM

What's even funnier Summertime is you have only won 21 games in 10 years and COACH Boone has won The 2007 Region Championship plus his team was 2006 Region Championship Runner-up. GO COACH BOONE! You are a force to be receckoned with.

summertime commented on Monday, Nov 05, 2007 at 13:37 PM

You are right, and for that I aplogize. :=) But are you referring to Middle School wins?

starburst51534 commented on Thursday, Dec 13, 2007 at 21:50 PM

summertime.

I had coach boone last year as an eighth grader in fitness. If you think hes a "laughing stock" and works with "apples and oranges" you should go sign yourself up right into a mental health institute. EVERY football player at RHMS respects him, and THATS one of the reasons his team is FREAKING AWESOME. You also talked about how the high school varsity football players are "man sized." HAHA. No, the football players are just as small, and i think Coach boone would do a GREAT job of whipping their scrawny little butts into shape and making them a BETTER TEAM.
