Mrs.
Wow! I must say that I was really surprised about the negative attitudes in some of these blogs regarding the new festival in Pembroke.
First of all I am not paid by Angela Reed to be her PR person. I cover Pembroke City Council meetings and most events in northern Bryan County for the Bryan County News. Angela is often written about in our paper because she is involved in the community and returns our phone calls. I would also like to point out that I have nothing to do with where a story is placed in the paper or if our editors decide to use a headshot or file photo to accompany it.
Second, why not a Pig Pickin'? Why would that make Pembroke appear to be a bunch of Hill Billies (as it was stated in an earlier blog). Maybe you have not been to a great Pig Pickin' before but, I have and my entire family always has a blast. The food is great, we listen to music, and enjoy good old fashion fun with our friends and neighbors. There is nothing hill billy about it. A Pig Pickin' is just about the same as a picnic featuring BBQ.
A little info about our community might help clarify why a Pig Pickin' is a great fit. We have a locally owned and operated Barbeque Sauce business right here in Pembroke. Busy Bee BBQ Sauce is very popular in our region and would make a great partner in the festival. I think any positive event for our community is a great idea.
The Balloon Festival was fun. I helped start it ten years ago but it wasn't cost effective. We started the Balloon Fest. as a fundraiser for the chamber and to bring people into our community. We never made a profit and we never had enough volunteers. It was time to try another route.
A fresh idea has been proposed. If you don't like it get involved. Show up at the meeting and lend a hand. There is no reason to be nasty and have a bad attitude towards the members of our community trying to improve Pembroke and provide positive ideas and leadership. I personally would love to see new volunteers come out and get involved!
