Good Schools

I am so tired of hearing the credit for Bryan County's schools heaped solely at the feet of Sallie Brewer. Here's a news flash for you folks: the reason our children are succeeding in school is because we have PARENTS who care. You can have the best teachers, a great superintendent and every resource in the world and still have failing schools. It takes PARENTS who instill the desire in their children to work hard and succeed in school, who volunteer in their children's classroom and attend PTSO meetings, who make every effort to know their child's teachers and friends, who applaud their children's accomplishments and are there to provide the help they need to overcome obstacles, who set the example they want their children to follow.

Do all parents in Bryan County fit this description? Of course not. But a large majority of them do, which is why we have higher-than-average test scores and lower-than-normal campus crime rates. It's not because Sallie Brewer has been in power for years. In fact, I'd say our students have succeeded IN SPITE of Sallie's iron-fisted rule.

We are blessed with some wonderful teachers who are passionate about what they do. We also have some teachers who need a new career because they have lost sight of why they got into this profession and they are harming the children in their care. I know -- my children have experienced both types in their 11 years of Bryan County schools. I've seen my kids soar under the tutelage of good teachers and merely hover with the bad ones. They didn't crash and burn because my husband and I never faltered in our support of THEM. It had nothing to do with who was superintendent.

I don't care who the teachers or superintendent are or how well-intentioned they may be. NO ONE is more concerned about MY children's educational success than ME, their mother. What we need is a superintendent who acknowledges that and chooses to work WITH us, not against us, for our children -- not her own agenda.
