Where were they?

This comes from Jessica Holthaus opinion article of July 18. "We know there are lots of active parents and residents who are interested in the future of the county: Where it’s headed, what information surrounds big decisions about development, education, water and sewer and so on. But where were they on Election Day?

Regardless of how many people came out to the polls this week, it’s clear those voters wanted to see a change in some areas, while keeping things the same in other areas. We’re just surprised 100 percent of voters in Bryan County let less than 17 percent make the final decision."

GG- What is even worse, is that those elected seem to run with the ball as if they were elected by 100% of the voters in Bryan County, when in fact they were elected by a smaller portion of the 17% of those who voted. Democracy is only available to those in Bryan County who can afford it.

The greatest right an American has is the right to vote. Shame those "patriotic" citizens don't feel it's worth the bother.

I voted! I always do. :)

Voting is not just a right. It's a civic duty.

----- What do you mean?

Can you tell me how they should respond to being elected? Maybe kneeling down to the bully Brewer would be more appropriate in your view.

The 17% who voted did not vote for the same person. For instance 11% may have voted for one candidate while 7% voted for another. With regard to how I would respond, I would seek input from everyone and not assume that because they failed to vote they do not have a voice in the process. I am sure the paper would be happy to participate when elected officials are seeking input and I sure hope that the focus of the newly elected school board does not put recreation before academics.

I don't think the newly elected BOE members has assumed anything. I see you have assumed a lot of negative things concerning the election results. What makes you think the remaining citizens that failed to vote would have voted for Brewer's hand picked canidates?

If a person chooses not to vote, they give up their right to complain or concern themselves with the election. By choosing not to vote, they agree to accept whatever the elected candidate's stance may be. You can say what you would do all you want, but you are not in their position and therefore do not know how you would respond. They won the election, they should represent the platform that they ran on to get elected.

What do you mean democracy is only available to those who can afford it? The last time I checked voter registration does not cost you anything. It has however, cost over 1 million of our soldiers from the armed forces their lives protecting that freedom.

The majority of the 17% whom did vote, did the right thing. Thank God we will now be on a new path away from the Old Guard which has dominated the BOE with personal "Moral Issues". We need educated and concerned members to run the system and we almost have that. A few more top changes and we will be there.
