From the 'just so you know' department ....
Usually, the Bryan County News' Saturday paper is put together from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening and we try to finish up by 7 p.m.
I’m bumping that schedule up a bit this week. Unless Hanna manages to disappear or turn toward Europe between now and early Thursday afternoon, most of the paper will be finished before I go home Thursday night or early Friday morning.

It will hapen for two very simple reasons.
1. We still don’t know what Friday will bring. While forecasts are now calling for Hanna to make landfall elsewhere, there’s still a chance it could change its mind. It’s been known to happen before.
2. By having the bulk of the paper finished early, we can devote more resources to covering whatever impact Hanna does - or doesn’t - have on Bryan County, either from our Richmond Hill office or the Statesboro Herald.
That’s the idea, anyway.

It may change a lot or a little over time. We're in a scenario where we still have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best, then adjust as the situation changes.

And with that said, just a few observations.

Making the right call not easy: Trying to figure out whether or not to order evacuations has got to be a royal headache, since it’s still impossible to predict with 100 percent accuracy where and when a hurricane will make landfall - and still give people enough time to get out of the way.
That’s why my hat’s off to those folks who take on the job, like Bryan County EMA Director Jim Anderson. Like a lot of people in public service, they’re in a no-win situation.
If they call for an evacuation and the hurricane misses, they get blamed for jumping the gun. If they don’t call for an evacuation and the hurricane hits, it’s ‘why didn’t you see this coming?’

On a related subject: The decision to move Bryan County’s game up a day to Thursday and Richmond Hill’s to Sept. 19 looks like the right call to me. Of course, Friday night will probably be beautiful, but look at it this way: What if they don’t call the game and we get a couple inches of rain or something worse happens?

On another related note: We still haven’t heard anything from school officials on whether or not schools will be closed Friday.

On yet still another related subject: Hanna has our attention now, but Ike and Josephine are stacking up out there somewhere in the Atlantic like jets waiting to land at an airport. Let’s just hope they don’t pick dry land.

Finally: If there is another evacuation of the Georgia coast, it's going to be interesting to see what happens.

PS. I hope none of you suffers any ill effects from Hanna, but if you happen to get some photos of wind or rain, please feel free to post them on this website or email them to me.
