Drugs at RHMS

What does anyone know about a kid being busted for pot at RHMS last week? Kids are telling their parents that the student who actually brought the pot to school is still in class, but the kid who got caught with some of it was expelled. How is this right? What about the kid who brought it to school? Why is he still in school? The kids say he had only been here about a week, and came from Chatham County. There were students who witnessed some of the goings on, but no further investigation has been made. Is this what we really want going on in our schools? Wouldn't it be a police matter now? Seems to me that the administration doesn't want this to get out to the community, but since many parents already know, shouldn't they expect an investigation and for the witnessing kids to be questioned? Are the board members aware of this? Is it alright with them to ignore this in our schools? Dr. Brewer would have to know about it if it resulted in an expulsion for the one student. Parents need to start asking the tough questions of the people who are supposedly in charge of our children's safety while at school.

I'm reading a lot of "the kids say". Did you call the school to see what they said? I realize they can't release any specific information but what you are repeating here is little more than gossip. The school or the Board may be able to at least address some of your concerns.

Also they can only punish what they have proof of. The kid who may have brought it to school wasn't the one caught with it in his possession. They can't just arrest or suspend someone without some sort of evidence.

Seriously, you need to contact the school first and if they're unwilling to help, contact the Board. Kids love drama and I have a feeling that you don't have the whole story because your kids and/or their friends don't have the whole story.

GET THE FACTS FIRST.
Talk is cheap. kids do run their mouth.
Have a "meeting" with ALL the kids that are talking, put their names to what they say and hold them accountable.
go see the other kids parents, get them involved.
take the bull by the horns.
go ask the police about such a report.
contact your school liason, ask questions, if no answers, contact your school board member, if no answer, then contact brewer.
you already know what to do, just do it.
your quote
"Parents need to start asking the tough questions of the people who are supposedly in charge of our children's safety while at school"
If my kids were in the school, I'd find a way to know the facts.
no drug is acceptable, not even pot.

First of all, the child is a minor, therefore they would not be able to tell you what if anything he did. Secondly, it is confidential information that schools can't release. Thirdly, how do you know that the students hasn't been questioned or punished? They wouldn't tell the other students or other parents if they have been. Give the schools a little more credit. They are not perfect but they would not just overlook this in order to hide it from the community.

Use this as a good opportunity to discuss illegal drugs with your own child. Gossip never goes anywhere, so ignore that. Worry about your child, make sure he/she knows doing illegal drugs (and legal ones, too) can have damaging effects, and know the schools are fine. If our only problem is gossip of what may or may not have happened with pot and one kid, we're doing good.

Are you serious? Do you actually believe that, first of all, Bryan County Schools are going to make themselves look bad by letting anyone know there were even drugs found in the schools! Second, are you so ignorant that you believe that there are no drugs in the schools? In this little town, the students know there's going to be a lock down in the school before the administration does. I've PERSONALLY witnessed students throwing away stuff before a bust was even announced! If it's found in a trash can, they can't charge anyone, and no one is going to claim it. At least in Chatham County you do know what's going on, the news has every drug bust on TV and what was found in the schools. Does anyone ever hear about Bryan County? Third, there is NOTHING for kids to do here. And sorry, not every kid wants to play a sport! Why don't you try buying them a car..... in pieces and telling the student that when they put it all together they can have a car to drive instead of buying them a new one? Well THAT would defiantly keep them busy and out of trouble, wouldn't it?

Of course there are drugs in the schools here! That's my point. They have been here for years, but the BOE and administrators deny it. What happened at RHMS is far from gossip. Ask the resource officer...

Maybe you should try getting the news involved. The school board hates that! Personally I always thought that information should be released to all the parents about the lock downs and drug busts. That of course doesn't necessarily help with the kids knowing about the lock down before administration. Until you get someone in office who really cares about safety and rules in this community, I doubt you'll get very many straight answers. Too many people here are overly concerned with their reputation and the presentation of what they are misrepresenting.
I don't know about you, but I can sit on a bench in the mall and pick out the people that are from Richmond Hill. The majority, NOT EVERYONE, of people that live here and have lived here their whole life have an attitude problem. I haven't really figured out why everyone seems to have the same attitude problem. I don't tell people I live in Richmond Hill anymore. Every time I do, I get the response "Oh, your one of them." I'm slightly more than ashamed of the community I live in.
I work at a customer service counter, everyone is EXPECTED to know everyone. I've never seen people REFUSE TO GIVE AN ID BEFORE. I just don't understand, with all the identity thefts you would think people would be GREATFUL that someone was trying to protect them. But that's the attitude of Richmond Hill for you, flat out rude, and an overrated scene of self importance.
The military families HERE happen to be some of the nicest people in this town. They've commented to me about how great they thought it was when the moved here and how they were mistaken because of the nastiness/ugliness/rudeness of the people here.
Everything here is a product of its environment. Kids and drugs are products of the environment. Too many people are following the "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" rule, sweeping everything under the rug, out of sight, out of mind.

You are so right about the snobby attitude of Richmond Hill. I have lived here for many years, and have seen it grow from a great little place to a big community of snobs. It has become increasingly worse in the past 10 years or so. Most of the people with that attitude are living way beyond their financial means, and are only trying to impress each other. Most of them can barely pay their house payment. You have to laugh at how ridiculous they look. They also think their kids can do NO wrong, but most of them are spoiled brats. I also like the military families that I know, and have tried to explain how RH has become this way. It's a shame that many of them are disappointed after moving here. I am often embarrassed to say I live here for fear that people will think I'm "one of them."

wondering ...???
how can there "not" be a police report on this?
are police reports not "open book" to the public???

ZQ24 commented on Tuesday, Sep 09, 2008 at 12:40 PM

Try getting a police report without a case number. Better yet try getting a police report that involves a minor. If you could get a copy of the report, don't you think that the media would be able to release more information about some of the cases? The police have to actually RELEASE that informaiton. Information like that isn't made public. Unless you happen to be one of those parties listed on the report.... GOOD LUCK!!

RHN0 commented on Tuesday, Sep 09, 2008 at 13:06 PM

Incidents involving minors are not public record and upon conclusion the records on the minors are sealed.

Police records are only partially open. You also can not get case files as they contain personal information, D.O.B.'s , SS#'s , etc. of non offenders.

If anyone has a magic bullet on how to get drugs out of the schools, please step forward. There has always been and always be drugs in the schools. The harsher penalties have greatly lessened it.

UserName commented on Tuesday, Sep 09, 2008 at 17:03 PM

The newspaper will not have access to police reports involving minors, but otherwise they are able to look through the reports and report in the paper at their own discretion. Hopefully, that same kid at RHMS will eventually get caught.
