Hot off the press from the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross continues to provide assistance to victims of Hurricane Gustav, spending an estimated $20 - $30 million a week to feed those displaced by the storm. Later tonight, Tropical Storm Hanna is expected to come ashore in the Carolinas, and let’s not forget that Hurricane Ike and Josephine are currently churning in the Gulf. This year alone, Red Cross has responded to the Wildfires in California, flooding in the Midwest, tornadoes, one after the other all across the country, and now hurricanes. The cumulative result of all these disasters has strained an already depleted Disaster Relief Fund. “Usually we have at least a few weeks between disasters” said Robin Wingate, CEO for the Savannah Red Cross, “but this year disasters are hitting in quick succession; and we’re only half way through hurricane season ’08”. As Red Cross reaches out to help the thousands of people affected by Hurricane Gustav, and prepares to help those that may be affected by Hanna, Ike and Josephine, we could use a little help ourselves. The saying “In the worst of times you depend on us, buy everyday we depend on you” has never been more true. The Red Cross is asking everyone who sees, reads or hears this message to give at least $1.00 to help replenish the National Disaster Relief Fund. Contributions will help provide a safe place to stay, a warm meal and emotional support to someone who has faced a life changing crisis and needs our help to begin the long road to recovery. To make a financial donation, call 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to the Savannah Chapter, American Red Cross, and P.O. Box 9987, Savannah, GA. 31412 or to the American Red Cross, P. O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting www.redcross.org. Also, you may text “2HELP” to contribute $5.00 to the National Disaster Relief Fund. $5.00 will be added to your next bill to cover the donation. All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disaster.
